HD Pictures & Post Inc., a new post facility comprising industry experts in High Definition and Digital Intermediate work, recently completed the 2K conform of the controversial trailer for Oliver Stone’s August-premiering film, “World Trade Center.” The trailer is currently being projected digitally and on film in theaters worldwide preceding “The Da Vinci Code,” broadcast in HD and SD for television, and is available online.
The film was shot on 35mm film and scanned at 2K. The trailer was versioned by the Picture Production Company to address worldwide deliverables – foreign language dubbing, titling, and alternative images. HD Pictures & Post EVP of Post Production Michael Forrest was brought in as the online editor for the trailers and to coordinate the versioning of 22 international versions -- 14 of which were conformed at HD Pictures & Post’s Santa Monica facility. For those versions, Forrest used the Avid DS Nitris system to add subtitles, replace shots, and conform the trailer in 2K, turning them around in just one day to meet worldwide deadlines.
“HD Pictures & Post really came through, said Ben Friend, Executive Vice President / Creative Director at the Picture Production Company. “There are very few places you can go that really know their way around 2K and can just jump in and get a project like this done in time. Michael knew exactly what to do, and HD Pictures & Post had the gear to get it all done on one machine. Every trailer ended up exactly right.”
HD Pictures & Post’s Forrest explained, “When you’re conforming 2K sequences, the look-up tables are critical. With DS Nitris you can take the raw images and apply the LUTs to simulate whatever stock, projector, or output device it’ll be viewed on. If you try to work just with the data, you never know what the final will look like, and that’s where things can get messy. This project was pretty hairy because of the 1-day turnaround, but we’ve done this workflow many times and we just applied it methodically. We’re really proud of the results.”
The 2K “World Trade Center” trailers are some of the first projects completed in HD Pictures & Post’s state of the art 7,500 square foot post production facility. Since opening its doors last fall, the team of veteran producers and post-production experts has also handled HD finishing work for all three “CSI” franchises, commercials for LucasArts and Midway Games, and HD screening work for the Lions Gate film “Hostel.”
